Denial, Despair, Distract, Develop

A story told in memes

Welcome home!

Parents are at home. Kids are at home. Work is at home. School is at home. We’re all at home all the time now and so is everyone else!

And memes. There are memes everywhere.

Future historians will piece together this portion of history based on our memes.

So what are people doing with all this time at home?

All the memes, posts, status updates, and texts tell a very real story. I swear I’m scrolling through the 5 stages of grief every time I open up Facebook.

Some people haven’t changed anything at all. I’m putting them in the straight up Denial category. If you think you’re the only sane one while everyone else has gone crazy, it might be time to look in the mirror and ask why are you trying so hard when the rest of the world is playing in survivor mode?

“Who? Me?”

Then there’s the other extreme. There’s the group that is sitting fixated in front of the news and reading every scary click-bait article that comes their way. They believe something is happening and that something is the end of the world. And these people are in full Despair.

I promise you, we’re going to see some Coronavirus PTSD and depression before this is all done (if we’re not seeing it already).

There is real despair out there but I’m going lighthearted with the memes

Then we get to the group choosing to Distract themselves. For many, this is proving more difficult than normal since I hear sports has also gone home.

Let me tell you, this is where I shine!

I mean, I’ve been preparing for this version of daily life since the early 80s when I first took Pong for a spin. When I was dating my wife, I told her she needed to know that I planned on playing video games until I died. I knew she was The One when she replied, “At least you won’t be leaving the house to play golf.” #blessed

I feel bad for those who like to be healthy and go to the gym or jogging or any of those other things that require moving on purpose. But trust me when I tell you that us gamers have been training for this day like healthy people train for the Olympics Bowl!

“I have to stay home…where my games are? YES!!!!!”

And then there’s the best mindset I’m seeing come out of this. There’s a group of people taking this time to Develop something that they wouldn’t normally. I’m seeing people develop their relationship with their spouses and kids, with family members via video chats, and developing new skills. It’s even inspired us to develop something (cough this blog cough…I mean, NOT COUGH I’M NOT COUGHING I SWEAR!)

And this is what I want to challenge us all to be doing. We’re all home. You know, that place we dream about as we drive to work on Monday mornings with tears and regret in our eyes. Well…you’re there now (or you probably should be). Take the time to develop something. A new positive habit. Read a book. Do something.

Don’t deny what’s happening and don’t despair either. Distract yourself as needed but then develop something that will outlast this period we find ourselves in.

We’re going to leave our homes again one day and look back at this period in history. What do you want to remember?
